Important Information

  • 2024-25 sportfishing regulations will be published later than usual. In the interim, the 2023 regulations will apply, and all anglers must continue following those regulations until the new 2024 Sportfishing Guide to Regulations have been published. Online 2023-24 Regulations can be found at AlbertaRegulations.ca.

Key Dates to Remember

  • Spring licences are available for purchase starting Thursday, March 14 at 9:00AM.
  • 2023 licence season closes on March 31, 2024 at 11:59PM.
  • Walleye Special Fish Harvest Draw application period is Tuesday, April 2 at 9:00AM to Thursday April 18 at 11:59PM

Before Purchasing your Licence

Sportfishing and Hunting Regulations, Licence Eligibility and Requirements

  • Anglers and hunters should know the regulations for the area where you plan to fish or hunt.
  • Anglers should check age and other requirements for Alberta sportfishing licences.
  • Hunters should check their eligibility to hold Alberta hunting licences.
  • First-time hunters, be sure to complete the Alberta Conservation and Hunter Education course. For more information visit AHEIA.com.

Important Information to Know

  • Canadian Armed Forces Veterans can receive a free Sportfishing Licence.
  • Anglers can choose to auto-renew their sportfishing licence. Simply choose to enroll in auto-renewals during the checkout process.
    • The auto-renew feature is currently only accessible through online purchases.
    • There is no fee for choosing to auto-renew. Enrolled licences will automatically renew upon the licences expiry.
  • Virtual WiN card: Save your time and money with the last WiN you'll ever need!
    • New WiN clients can purchase a Virtual WiN with a one-time activation fee of $8.00 (plus GST). Existing WiN holders, upon current WiN expiry will be required to pay the one-time $8.00 (plus GST) activation fee to renew their WiN for the very last time.
    • After purchasing your new Virtual WiN, it never expires and no additional renewals are ever needed.
  • To apply for a Special Hunting Licence Draw every individual must purchase of a Wildlife Certificate prior to applying. Including all group members and priority only applications.
    • All members of a group application must purchase their Wildlife Certificate separately confirming their residency and hunter eligibility status. A group leader can not purchase a Wildlife Certificate on behalf of group members.
  • Harvest and effort reporting is mandatory on all special hunting licences purchased. Reporting can be completed at AlbertaRELM.com or in the mobile App. Learn more on how to complete your harvest and effort reporting here.
    • Failure to submit your reporting will result in future restrictions on the eligibility to apply for future special licence draws and the requirement of a survey fee to restore that privilege.
    • Every completed survey will be entered into a draw for a 2025 opportunity to hunt a Moose, Elk, Mule Deer or Antelope.

  • The AlbertaRELM App is the official hunting and fishing licence management App for the Government of Alberta.
  • The App is available in the Apple App Store and in the Google Play Store.
  • Please remember that the onus remains on the individual to produce their licence (paper or electronic) when requested by an officer in the field.

Additional Information and Questions

  • To begin the purchase process online, login with your unique identifier on file.
    • Identifier options to login include your Wildlife Identification Number (WiN), Driver's Licence Number, Healthcare ID, Passport Number or Canadian Armed Forces Number.
  • If this is your first time purchasing a sportfishing or hunting licences in Alberta and you do not have a WiN, you can Create an Account in a few easy steps.
  • If you have a WiN number, but haven't set up an account yet, please look up your profile to update your account.
  • Name changes to your account can only be done in-person at a Licence Issuer. Please check your local location for hours of operation.
  • For licences that require tags, make sure to have your unused pre-numbered green Alberta tags in hand before purchasing your licence. Tags are required to complete the online purchase. For information on how to obtain tags click here.
